Eastwood Secondary School received a donation of 100 desks and chairs from Hulamin last Friday, following severe damage to the school’s furniture and infrastructure caused by the heavy rainfall in 2021.
The handover ceremony, which took place on the school grounds, was attended by Hulamin representatives, school staff, and pupils.
This donation was part of Hulamin’s employee volunteerism programme, reflecting the company’s commitment to education and corporate social responsibility.

The new furniture is expected to improve the pupils’ classroom experience. According to school principal Kaylee Maroney, the school has faced challenges since the heavy rains, with many classrooms left without roofs and sufficient furniture.
Pupils had to squeeze into available spaces, affecting their ability to focus and learn.
Maroney expressed her gratitude for Hulamin’s support, highlighting the positive impact this donation will have on students and teachers.
Our school has struggled with a shortage of basic furniture, which has had a direct impact on learning and teaching. Hulamin’s support helps bridge that gap and motivates our learners
She added that the school has been making efforts to rebuild since the rains destroyed most of the school’s roofs and classroom equipment. “This improved setup will allow for a more focused and organised learning environment, greatly benefiting the pupils,” Maroney said.
Ayanda Mngadi, group executive for corporate affairs at Hulamin, said the company’s commitment to supporting education is a central part of its community development goals.
“We believe that education is the cornerstone of a prosperous society. Providing essential resources like desks and chairs not only enhances the learning experience but also gives students the dignity of a proper study environment,” said Mngadi.
