WINTERSVILLE — Two events on Wednesday will offer a nostalgic look at the past and an opportunity to purchase a variety of crafts and food, including freshly grown produce, when the Jefferson County Farmers Market makes its season debut about the same times as the next edition of Wednesdays in Wintersville.
Irene Moore, district administrator for the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District, said an assortment of vendors will be found in the parking lot of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at 852 Main St. from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Moore said during the next four months, visitors to the market will find a variety of vegetables, fruits, honey, baked goods, jams, jellies, herbs, spices, meats and other food products as well as handmade items including soaps and pottery.
The market is slated to continue each Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. through September.
Moore added anyone interested in selling fresh produce, naturally made artisan products, cut flowers and other locally produced items should call the district's office at (740) 264-9790.
News of the market's return comes as the volunteer committee behind the Wednesdays in Wintersville street fair announce the Steel Valley Regional Transit Authority has offered to provide free shuttles from Blessed Sacrament and other sites to the event's new location in the parking lot of the Wintersville Village Building.
Stops also will be made to the Wintersville Village Building parking lot, where the festival's many food and craft vendors and live entertainment are located this year; as well as Exquisite Creations by Joel, Jefferson County Christian School and the Kroger store.
This year the group decided to move its many food and craft vendors and live entertainment to a central location, though Wintersville United Methodist Church and businesses along Main Street have continued to offer activities and special attractions.
Many families have gathered outside the United Methodist Church for a bounce house and other inflatable play structures and free treats offered by members of the church and others.
The Wednesdays in Wintersville committee has come up with a variety of themes for the monthly festival, and this month's motif, Summer of Love, has inspired many activities.
A vintage car show will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the United Methodist Church, with car owners asked to arrive at 4 p.m., while plans call for vintage wedding dresses to be displayed inside the church during the same hours.
Area residents interested in displaying their dresses are invited to bring them in advance to the Valley Wine Cellar at 825 Main St.
The dresses’ owners are asked to include the names of the bride and groom, wedding date and a photo from the wedding. Organizers said the gowns will be displayed after the show.
The festivities also will include a recreation of television's "Dating Game" by the Indian Creek High School Drama Club at 5 p.m. with a recreation of "The Price is Right" at 5:30 p.m.
Festival-goers interested in taking part in the latter "show" and winning prizes donated by local businesses should register by calling (740) 275-4380.
Following the game shows at the Village Building lot, disc jockey Nick Riley will be playing a lot of "groovy" tunes from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., said organizers.
Visitors to nearby Exquisite Creations by Joel may observe a pottery demonstration by Peaceflower Pottery from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. or create their own floral bouquet during the festival.
The bouquets may be taken home or donated to a resident at Dixon Healthcare Center, a skilled nursing home.
Joel John and Mary Decker, the festival's co-chairs, expressed local businesses that have sponsored this month's activities.
Overall sponsors for this month are the Cochrun Contracting Co., Cochrun Capital and Valley 3 Builders while Polished Look Detailing is sponsoring the car show and Steubenville Tailoring is sponsoring the vintage wedding dress show.
